Wyvern Community School is a community comprehensive school providing a high quality education for students aged 11 to 16. In a typical class of 28 students, about 40% come from the town centre/sea front area; 40% come from the estates in the south of the town [which we share with Broadoak School] and the rest come from the north of the town.
When you visit our school you will see that it is warm and friendly but also very purposeful and business-like. We have a very clear focus on the quality of the teaching and learning taking place, and I make no apologies for saying that we expect students to come here to be focussed on learning. Our role is to prepare the students for the working world. The vast majority go on to local colleges and then to university. We have our first Oxford University entrant this year.
We have a clear zero tolerance policy regarding behaviour and uniform. Any infringement of the rules is challenged and dealt with in a firm but fair way. We have a clear anti-bullying policy: Wyvern is a ‘telling school’ and we deal with any incidents of bullying quickly and effectively.
All schools in North Somerset have a specialism. Ours is Sports. This means we have increased funding and staffing and enhanced facilities to do extra things for students in sport. But all this is extra to a normal secondary school curriculum in which we offer the full range of school subjects. Indeed, the results we gain in subjects such as Maths and Languages put those subjects in the top 10% of schools nationally. In addition, we put on a full range of school concerts in Music, Drama and Dance and produce a big musical each year. Look out for Peter Pan in the autumn!
These are exciting times at Wyvern, with a special focus on Year 7 students. We have created a ‘school within a school’ where they will have their own social area, locker area and toilets just for them. They will experience a special curriculum where we focus on teaching students how to learn and giving them the range of skills that are relevant to today’s business community. Throughout the school we constantly reinforce the messages about ‘being your best’ in everything that you do, about aiming high and striving to improve and about ‘sportsmanship’. I want Wyvern to be the best school in Weston and I expect all members of the school community to strive for this goal.
We are designated as being the Full Service Extended School [in partnership with the adjacent Primary school] which means that we have provision for students aged from 3 to 16 from 7:30 in the morning to 7:00 in the evening most days of the week. We are also part of the Weston Education Partnership (WEP), working with the other three secondary schools and two special schools. The WEP has worked with Weston College to get all the schools involved in the promotion and teaching of A-levels either on school sites or by school teachers travelling to the 6th Form Centre. We teach A levels in PE and Sport, and from September 2008, in Maths too in our new extension.
Wyvern is a school that is on a journey. It has come a long way and I encourage you to contact me to arrange a tour to see the results for yourself.
