Looking after pupils

One of the strengths of Wyvern Community School is the way we treat each pupil as an individual. Whilst we encourage all pupils to become confident and successful learners we do have systems in place to help those who find life in school difficult.

All pupils are allocated to a mixed ability tutor group. We have a fixed team of special ‘Induction Tutors’ who spend the first year making sure all pupils settle in quickly. In Year 8, pupils move on to a second tutor who will follow the group through until they leave in Year 11. Each team of tutors is led by a Year Leader. Their role is to make sure that all pupils are performing to the best of their ability, as well as to deal with any problems that may arise.

If you have any problems with school, the first person you should always contact is your child’s tutor.

We have a Special Educational Needs team that works hard with other agencies, pupils and teachers to try to meet the needs of all our pupils. We do not have a designated special unit or any particular specialism; we just work hard at ensuring every pupil can succeed!

We have a School Council which is made up of two representatives from each Year group. There is also a Year Council which is made up of two representatives from every tutor group. This body discusses real issues that are bothering pupils and calls in adults such as the Catering Manager to raise issues about lunchtimes! The School Council also takes part in interviewing candidates who come to Wyvern for a job!

We are setting up a ‘No Worries’ Health Clinic, run by health professionals on the school site and we are developing the role of ‘peer mentors’ where pupils can be a listening buddy which is especially helpful for our younger pupils.
